Having septic system problems?
In the mountains of Colorado many things can contribute to a slow or clogged septic system. Some of
the most common problems are:
A clogged pipe within the home can cause sewage to back up through the toilet or a sink drain, but can
also be caused from a clogged pipe in the external Septic System. Here in Fairplay and the surrounding
areas from Conifer, Breckenridge and Woodland Park, a damaged or frozen sewage pipe can be the culprit. The sewage pipe, between the home and the septic tank, can break due to freezing temperatures or improper installation, and be plugged by roots, rocks and other debris. Once the pipe breaks it can make an underground cavern with raw sewage. Often times with the raw sewage making its way back towards the house and soaking through to the water table. Not good!
In the High Rockies, during winter months, we suggest having electrical power run near your septic tank to power an in-tank heater. This could be as simple as using a pond heater from your local hardware store. A frozen tank can cause your sewage line to freeze and back up into the house. This occurs more commonly in secondary residences that may experience less frequent use in the winter.
Improper installation of the sewage pipe can be the culprit at any time of year. Improper bedding of the
pipe is a common problem that we see. Some contractors backfill the pipe with native materials which
contain rocks and roots. Such material can and will puncture the sewage pipe causing a fracture.
Settling can be a serious issue as well. If the tank or sewage pipe settle at different levels, the sewage
pipe may be flowing back toward the home creating a puddle in the pipe. Such a puddle can cause a clog or freezing incident, referred to earlier in the article. If you find yourself in need of a professional, please feel free to reach out.
